Sommelier Guide to Building an Unpretentious Wine List

Creating a wine list for your home, event, or dinner party can feel daunting but it doesn’t have to be overly complicated. The goal is to find the perfect blend of variety, quality, and personal expression.

Start with the basics: include a mix of reds, whites, rosés, and at least one sparkling option.

Next, avoid overly obscure or hard-to-pronounce wines unless you really love them. Nobody wants to feel like they need a sommelier certification just to pick a glass. Go for wines that are approachable but still show a little personality.

It’s also smart to balance crowd-pleasers with some interesting bottles for adventurous sippers.

Most importantly, choose wines you genuinely enjoy. Enthusiasm is contagious. Your excitement and authenticity will always outshine an overly “impressive” list.
